Equal Rights For Fembots!

Japan Grants Suffrage To Female Robots

TOKYO—Ending a decades-long struggle for gender equality at the ballot box, Prime Minister Shinzō Abe of Japan signed a new measure into law on Thursday extending the right to vote to female robots.

The landmark legislation, hailed as a victory by Japanese suffragette androids everywhere, will for the first time allow the nation’s entire adult robot population to participate in elections, regardless of which simulated sex organs they have been equipped with.

“Despite their many contributions to our society, female robots have never been allowed to participate in our democracy,” Abe said at a press conference, flanked by feminine-looking automatons that can pour drinks, model fashions on the runway, immediately identify and neutralize criminals, and comfort the elderly. “They’ve served us as doctors, autonomous traffic drones, hover-nannies, and internationally popular musical sensations. Now, it’s time we let them vote.”

“This is a momentous day for all Japanese citizens,” he added. “Whether you were born naturally or assembled from a web of nano-tubes and imbued with a lifetime of artificial memories.”

it’s about damn time, right?!! i mean, if you can give murdering rapists and illegal aliens the right to vote — then why not the fembots?

humanity just took a small step forward if you ask me…

Happy St. Patricks Day

if i had to choose between St. Valentine and St. Patrick, i know which one i would go with… speaking of which, i’ve been kinda surprised for the past few years now that not more liberal people hit the streets and protest valentine’s or st. patty’s day on anti-religious grounds.

then again, i don’t think that most people really identify the two holidays by their religious backgrounds… hell, i doubt most kids even know the history behind either of them now that i’m thinking about it.

either way, i’ve always enjoyed St. Patty’s and love to go out for some good food and lots of guinness.

GOP: Fix The Health Care Bill

The House Should Slow Down and Fix the GOP Health-Care Bill

The American Health Care Act, the House Republicans’ proposal for repealing and replacing large parts of Obamacare, has had a rough start in life. It was introduced by House leaders on March 6 to a chorus of groans from all ends of the party. Freedom Caucus members and some other conservatives opposed its refundable tax credit and thought its Medicaid reforms took too long to get going. Many of the conservatives most engaged in the details of health care in recent years, meanwhile, thought its credit was not well designed to allow most people to obtain at least catastrophic coverage, and they worried about some peculiar features that seemed counterproductive. The hope of Republican leaders to rush the bill through the House and then the Senate in record time seemed implausible.

And then on March 13, the Congressional Budget Office made things even worse. The agency’s modelers projected that, while the bill would significantly reduce the deficit and ultimately reduce premium costs in the individual market, it would leave about 24 million more people without insurance in ten years than would have been the case under Obamacare.

To see how harsh an assessment that is, consider that in January the CBO projected that a bill that simply repealed all of Obamacare — its taxes, mandates, subsidies, and regulations of insurance — would leave 23 million more people without coverage in ten years. So a full repeal alone would actually leave more people covered than does the Republicans’ repeal and replacement, in the agency’s judgment. But things are not nearly so simple, of course, and the CBO’s assessment might actually point toward improvements that could strengthen the Republican approach.

Defenders of the Republican bill have responded to CBO’s score of it by questioning the agency’s health-care modeling and its past performance. Critics of the bill have responded by pointing to the proposal’s numerous peculiar flaws. Both sides are right.

Without question, CBO’s health-care model has enormous problems. The congressional scorekeeper has always exaggerated the effectiveness of blunt rules like Obamacare’s individual mandate. Its baseline Medicaid projections have long overestimated growth rates in ways that make conservative reforms look like bigger cuts than they turn out to be. And its insistence that competition does not lead to business-model innovation in insurance has led it astray before too — as in its vast exaggeration of the cost of the Bush administration’s Medicare prescription-drug benefit in 2003. Continue…

seriously, what a fucking mess… feel like i’ve been hearing about healthcare in one way or another for the past decade now, and they still can’t seem to get together and figure it out… but i guess that’s simply asking too much.

Obamacare Was the Wrong Road to Go Down, but Backtracking Is Hard

Let’s Reboot The Matrix!

Yes, Of Course Warner Bros Is Going To Reboot The Matrix

It’s often said that’s nothing is certain in life except death, taxes, and movie studios rebooting their biggest properties in a desperate attempt to stay relevant within the franchise dominated media landscape. I think Ben Franklin might have said it, but who knows for sure.

In any case, I always kind of assumed that The Matrix would end up getting a reboot at some point in the future. The fact that the trilogy grossed over a billion and a half dollars nearly 20 years ago is just too tempting for any money hungry studio (i.e. all of them) to leave untouched. And despite the pretty negative reaction to the sequels, The Matrix remains a culturally relevant, “known” brand with a world that is ripe for exploring. And so why wouldn’t WB exploit that for all its worth?

feel like i read something about a possible Matrix reboot quite awhile back, but i thought it was more like some internet wishfoo thinking / rumors… but i guess not.

they’re actually going to “reboot” the Matrix.

No Avatar Sequel in 2018

James Cameron Says No Avatar Sequel in 2018

In an interview published by the Toronto Star, James Cameron reveals that the sequel to the groundbreaking 3D movie Avatar will not hit theaters in 2018. Of course, Cameron notes that he is not merely making Avatar 2. Three sequels to the original are in concurrent production, which represents an epic eight-year undertaking for the director of the top grossing movie of all time.

Avatar’s influence on the movie and the TV industry cannot be overstated. Even though 3D for home viewing is becoming a niche format for AV enthusiasts who are into front projection—major TV makers totally abandoned 3D in 2017—it persists as a popular choice in commercial cinemas and 3D movies continue to be released. […]

Regardless of what the ramifications are of delaying the first sequel—Cameron notes that there never was a firm release date—one thing is for sure: When these sequels arrive, there’s no telling what sort of innovations they will serve as catalysts for. After all, with Avatar and Titanic, Mr. Cameron is responsible for the #1 and #2 top grossing films of all time—quite an accomplishment.

to be honest, i’m kinda tired hearing about these vaporware new Avatar movies or sequels… after all this time, i wished they’d just stop talking about it… if he ever actually does come out with a sequel, cool beans… otherwise, why even bother talking about it?

‘Iron Fist’ Blames Trump

Finn Jones Blames Donald Trump for Bad ‘Iron Fist’ Reviews

“Iron Fist” star Finn Jones thinks part of the reason the latest Netflix Marvel show is getting panned is because of the American political climate — in particular, Donald Trump.

Speaking to Radio Times, Jones said part of the problem is that his “Iron Fist” character, Danny Rand, is a white billionaire. And as he sees it, the one of those currently holding the US presidency is making critics less receptive to Danny’s story.

“I think the world has changed a lot since we were filming that television show,” he said in the interview. “I’m playing a white American billionaire superhero, at a time when the white American billionaire archetype is public enemy number one, especially in the US.

“We filmed the show way before Trump’s election, and I think it’s very interesting to see how that perception, now that Trump’s in power, how it makes it very difficult to root for someone coming from white privilege, when that archetype is public enemy number one.”

so wait a second, he’s actually blaming all the negative reviews from practically everybody that’s watched the first 6 episodes on Trump?!? …seriously??

gimme a break, how about making a good show?

most of the people that’ve watched it loved Dare Devil and Luke Cage, which is telling you something… and it certainly doesn’t have anything to do with Trump.

i have my own issues with Trump, but this just seems like a lame excuse for making a crappy show.

AI is ‘a Fascist’s Dream’

SXSW 2017: Microsoft Research executive warns AI is ‘a fascist’s dream’ and could be abused

Artificial Intelligence has grown exponentially in the past few years. However, its advancements also bring with it the risk of abuse. Microsoft Research’s principal researcher Kate Crawford warned of the possibilities of AI and its subtly coded human biases likely being abused by authoritarian regimes. Speaking at SXSW in a session titled DARK DAYS: AI and the Rise of Fascism, Crawford cautioned that machine intelligence could possibly be used to further fascism.

Crawford also highlighted the “nasty history” of people using facial features to “justify the unjustifiable, warning that AI could incorporate the primary aspects of phrenology and other types of discrimination and mask it in a “black box” of algorithms.

“Just as we are seeing a step function increase in the spread of AI, something else is happening: the rise of ultra-nationalism, rightwing authoritarianism and fascism,” she said, the Guardian reported.

She also warned that AI could be used in creating registries which could be exploited by governments to target certain groups of the population. She outlined historical cases of such registry abuse, including IBM’s role in supporting Nazi Germany to reportedly track Jewish and other ethnic groups with the Hollerith Machine.

hmmm, well damn… that’s one way of looking at it.

Winter Strikes Back

Winter strikes back: Cold hits the East Coast with a blizzard on the way

Freezing temperatures hit much of the Northeast this weekend, and a blizzard is expected to sweep through New York and Boston on Monday in what could possibly be the region’s biggest snowstorm of the season.

The March storm, which has followed what has been a mild winter for the region, could dump up to 18 inches on Central Park between late Monday and Tuesday morning, according to The Associated Press.

The storm could bring periods of intense snowfall, with as much as 2 or 3 inches per hour possible at times.

Washington, D.C., could get 6-10 inches, Baltimore could see 8-12 inches, and Philadelphia is forecast to get 10-14 inches.

feel like everybody’s been talking about this coming winter storm all day today, and i’m seriously not looking forward to it… i know i’ve bitched a little about this weird/warm winter we’ve been having this year, but i just can’t get excited about snow and sleet.

damnit.

Speedrunning Zelda

Zelda: Breath of the Wild speedrunners are taking down the game in less than an hour

Not even two weeks from its launch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been beaten (any percent completion) in less than an hour by three speedrunners, and as more take up the challenge there is a small controversy dividing the community.

First, the news: Runner Venick409 claimed a new world record yesterday with a mark of 54:05. This is an “any%” completion goal, which means, basically, finishing a game’s story or beating its final boss.

even with using this “amiibo”, that’s pretty damn incredible… playing through the entire new zelda game in under an hour is a fucking feat, if you ask me.
