My First Anime?

What Show Got You into Anime? 10,000 Japanese Fans Respond.

i’m not sure how or why it happened, but i’ve been on a big anime kick again of late… actually, i can easily blame my son for it, since he’s been on a big anime binge of late too — keeps showing me some new shows he stumbled across or started watching, then i turn around and get into it as well.

just finished watching the first 8 episodes of Aldnoah.Zero and it was pretty cool… still waiting for the second season of “Psycho Pass” to watch online, and also finally watched the third episode (Border 3) of the ghost in the shell reboot.

oh, and the first japanese cartoon that i really got into as a kid?

robotech, without question.

Burger King Going Canadian On US?

Burger King Wants to Become Canadian to Avoid U.S. Taxes

The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday evening that Burger King is seeking to buy Tim Horton’s, the Canadian coffee and donut chain, to lower its U.S. tax bill.

You may be wondering, how does Burger King reduce its tax liability by purchasing a Canadian fast food company? The answer is that the deal is structured as a “tax inversion” which allows Burger King to switch its official tax jurisdiction from the United States, where the federal corporate tax rate is 35 percent, to Canada, where it is 15 percent. Presto! Burger King’s tax bill is suddenly much lower.

If it sounds ridiculous that an American company can purchase a foreign firm and suddenly avoid the U.S. corporate tax system, that’s because it is. Under current U.S. tax law, if the American company transfers 20 percent or more of its shares to the foreign firm, it can switch its official tax jurisdiction. It doesn’t matter that the vast majority of the shareholders are still American. Or that the management and control of the company remains in the U.S. Or that in making the deal, nothing about the company actually changes. You would still be able to grab a Whopper for lunch. Its thousands of American workers will all still have their jobs. But Burger King will have opted out of the U.S. corporate tax system.

well, that does certainly suck and they should definitely plug that corporate tax hole — but hell, to be honest, i just kinda figured they’d done something especially after the news about how GE paid no taxes in 2010… so what the hell?

on the other hand, maybe they should drop that corporate tax down a bit… 35% is a bit high.

Blade Runner Sequel

Ridley Scott says ‘Blade Runner’ sequel script is finished and ‘damn good’

Ridley Scott has been working on a sequel to Blade Runner for at least a couple years, and it now appears that the script is ready to roll. “It’s written and it’s damn good,” he tells Entertainment Weekly. The story will bring back Harrison Ford, who starred in the 1982 film as one of the eponymous replicant hunters.

Scott says that Ford’s character is “a survivor after all these years,” which, certainly, is a curious fact in and of itself given the ambiguous ending of certain cuts of the film. There’s no specific timetable on when the sequel will be made, but Scott sounds confident. “So yes,” he tells EW, “that will happen.”

Up next for Scott is an adaptation of The Martian, the best-selling novel first released in 2012. Scott suspects that Blade Runner will come after this, though he has a lot on his plate — including a sequel to Prometheus, which also has a finished script. Basically, Scott’s been super busy for the past few years, and if Blade Runner doesn’t get done soon, it may just be because he has a lot of other projects on his plate. He’s latest film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, comes out on December 12th.

i’d like to be pretty excited about a new Blade Runner, but after Prometheus… well, i’m not so sure anymore.

maybe they should come out with a Blade Runner tv show, a reboot like what they did with BSG… but on HBO, so i could have a bit more freedom… hmmm.

p.s. speaking of blade runner, here’s it’s colors of motion

Donald Glover will finally play Spider-Man on TV

Apple Admits iPhone Battery Flaw

Apple admits iPhone 5 battery flaw and issues recall…

Apple has admitted that some iPhone 5 handsets were sold with defective batteries which ran out too quickly and has launched a free replacement scheme to resolve the issue.

Apple said in a statement that a “very small percentage” of iPhone 5 handsets had battery problems. The affected devices “may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently”, it said.

Customers in the US and China can have their batteries replaced now, while the programme will commence in Europe on August 29.

Those taking their phone to an Apple shop to have their battery replaced are being advised by the company to backup their data to iTunes or iCloud first, turn off the Find my iPhone feature and erase all data.

Those handsets with cracked screens may need to be repaired before the battery can be replaced, says Apple, and the owner will be charged for that service.

well, certainly took them long enough to come around and admit it… but at least they did, and i hope for those that have had faulty batteries that they get them replaced free of charge… i just entered my iphone’s serial number, and it said that i wasn’t eligible.

oh well.

Objectifying Sofia

Sofia Vergara’s bizarre, objectifying Emmy moment…

just got out of a two hour morning meeting — always fun — and saw a bunch of tweets about sofia vergara… apparantly she was standing on a turn-table and i guess a bunch of feminists took issue with it… but i guess they have no objections to what they show at the VMA’s?

i get how some people might have an issue with something… but kinda drives me nuts is the picking and choosing… i mean, at least be consistent about it.

Would You?

apparently the VMA’s were on lastnight on MTV, but as usual i totally missed out on it — just as i have for the past decade or two — but saw enough tweets to figure it must’ve rolled around again… anywho, here’s a photo of taylor swift which kinda begs the eternal question… would you?

p.s. hint of some camel toe, or is it just me?

Lusty LG 4K OLED’s

LG’s 4K OLED TVs Are the New Astronomically Priced Sets to Lust After

Now that 1080p OLED TVs are borderline affordable, it’s time to turn your lust to a new unattainably expensive type of set. For your consideration, LG has just unveiled two new big-screen Ultra HD (4K) TVs that are also OLED panels.

Although 4K OLEDs were practically everywhere at CES in January, these will be the first ones you can buy. It’s no surprise that they’re coming from LG, as the company is the only big-name manufacturer that is actively producing OLED TVs at the moment. Preorders for the two TVs begin in South Korea immediately, but there is no pricing or release information for the U.S. or Europe just yet. However, both sets will be on display at the IFA show in Berlin next week.

oh man, i could easily get a little “lusty” over some beatifoo 4K OLED’s… wish like hell they were more affordable, but i guess i’ll just have to wait a few more years until they come down to where us mere mortals can get our grubby hands on ‘em… i did see the 55″ curved LG OLED the other week, and the picture on that was just fucking amazing.

it really is like the next-gen display.

p.s. taking me a bit to get used to, but i’m liking my new sony 4k set.

‘Dead’ Artist Ignored

Artist Lies ‘Dead’ In Front Of An Iconic Statue, Gets Ignored By The Public

In the wake of the murder of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by a policeman, and the subsequent protests of police brutality, tensions have been high among many communities.

On Saturday August 16 in Philadelphia, artist activists draped yellow CAUTION ribbon around the iconic LOVE statue in Love Park and actor Keith Wallace positioned himself face-down in front of the statue, wearing a white t-shirt that appeared to be stained with blood, as if he were shot from behind. Standing near him, two people alternated the holding of a sign that read “Call Us By Our Names.”

For an hour, Wallace lay in front of the emblematic, tourist-attracting statue – all the while, tourists continued to pose in front of the statue, usually while framing Wallace out of the photo, or blocking the view of his body in some way.

dunno why, just got a little chuckle from this one.
